Round 8 Coaches Report
Last Saturday we had our most complete performance, with a win over Seaton 19.9.123 to 13.12.90. Seaton are in a very similar position to us on the ladder so we knew this away win was essential in keeping our finals hopes alive.
Kicking against a very strong breeze in the first quarter, the players did extremely well to restrict their scoring opportunities while managing to score 3 goals against the breeze. We went into the quarter time break 2 goals down.
I was nervous to see how we would go kicking with the breeze as we have been wasteful in recent weeks kicking with strong breezes. The players played their best quarter for the year. They ran hard, dominated stoppages, executed their skills and kicked accurately for goal. We outscored them by 8 goals and held a handy 6 goal lead into half time.
The third quarter was similar to the first, with our players restricting Seaton’s ball movement and playing the percentage, while kicking into the windy conditions.
Seaton, knowing that their season was on the line, lifted at the start of the last and were able to kick the first couple of goals. However, after we responded with a few quick goals of our own, the fight was out of them. We continued to kick goals at will and really enjoy a comfortable last quarter.
Our midfield were exceptional and featured heavy in our best players lead by Liam Toohey, Hamish Gordon and Nick Westhoff. While up forward we had numerous multiple goal kickers sharing the load. Justin Whitford kicked 4, while Sam Williams and Hamish Gordon kicked 3.
This week we have a bye, which is great for our players to refresh before finals. However our spot in the five isn’t guaranteed yet with an unexpected result in one of the other games last week. A win against Sacred Heart could see us as high as 3rd whereas a loss could mean we finish 6th and miss out on final action. The players are playing really well at the moment and there is no reason we can’t win this game. Recently we’ve had 2 great wins and are building momentum heading into this important final game.
