Round 6 Coaches Report

Round 6 was a tough loss to Old Ignatians Away at the beautiful Karen Rolten Oval. Final result was Old Ignatians 13.15 to PHOS 14.5 – an agonising 4 point loss. A very disappointing result as we definitely had our opportunities. We corrected our goal kicking accuracy from the previous week and we’re lucky Old Ignatians let us off the hook with a number of their missed shots.

We started the game quite well, our defence really carried us throughout the game but especially in the first quarter. Old Iganatians had a number of repeat inside 50 entries, with our defenders taking a number of intercept marks and forcing their opponents to lead out wide, resulting in a lot of difficult shots on goal from the boundary.

We eventually got our game going and found that we were extremely efficient and accurate when we went forward. Forwards such as Underwood, Ramsey, Gordan and Williams all looked extremely dangerous and kicked multiple, we just need to get them more 1 on 1 opportunities.

We won our fair share of stoppages but were struggling to transition the ball between the arcs and get good entries to the advantage of our forwards. We were forced to kick long down the line too often, where we were out crumbed most of the day. We were outnumbered at the contest due to Old Ignatians’ superior work rate. They transitioned the ball really well, using their short kicking and overlap handball game style. They moved the ball very quickly and were able to isolate their forwards with their speed of entries.

Despite all this we still held a healthy 21 point lead at halftime. We were playing quite well. Unfortunately, in the third quarter, our discipline let us down and Old Ignatians kicked accurately. We gave away far too many free kicks in dangerous areas and at crucial moments. We lost our lead, losing the quarter 7.3 to 3.1.

The final quarter was an arm wrestle, with a number of repeat stoppages and both teams desperate to win. We hit the lead mid-way through the quarter and definitely had opportunities to extend it, but unfortunately it wasn’t our day.

Mark Yeatman was clearly our best player on the day, his intercept marking and accurate kicking coming out of defence saved a number of goals for us. Unfortunately, late in the last quarter he suffered a horrific injury to his ankle, later confirmed to be broken. We wish him all the best with his surgery and recovery.

This puts us at 3 wins and 3 losses for the season, sitting just outside of the 5. It’s frustrating as I feel we have played some really good football this year and could quite easily be 6-0, but minor lapses have costs us. With a young and exciting group, our consistency isn’t there yet but players are constantly learning and working hard to improve. Our hope of finals isn’t over yet but every week will feel like an elimination final from now.

Look forward to playing Broadview at home this week.
