Round 5 Coaches Report
Round 5 was a tough loss to Tea Tree Gully at home. Final result was 11.20 to 17.10 – a 26 point loss. A disappointing result as we definitely had our opportunities. Inaccurate goal kicking and not handling the windy conditions resulted in our 2nd loss for the year.
Tea Tree Gully started the game really well, outscoring us into the breeze in the first quarter. They were a lot cleaner with their possessions and ran harder to outnumber us at the contest. We lifted our intensity in the second quarter, our tackle pressure and zoning kickouts enabled us to play most of the 2nd quarter in our half. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to capitalise on our efforts kicking 2 goals, 8 behinds.
We went in at halftime up by 7 points and feeling quite positive about our position. The third quarter was an arm wrestle and we weren’t able to kick ahead like we would’ve hoped. The game opened up in the last and Tea Tree Gully were able to use their hard running and clean skills to pile on goals. They kicked 9.3 to our 2.5 to overrun us.
In defence, Yeatman and Vassallo played well, while up forward Whitford took a number of contested marks and Gordon was again dangerous in and around goal, while also contributing in the midfield.
This puts us at 3 wins and 2 losses for the season and unfortunately puts us back with the pack in this shortened season. We have some really tough games coming up – no more important than this week away against Old Ignatians who are improving each week and had a great win last weekend. They will playing with confidence and will be a tough challenge for us to bounce back.
