Round 4 Coaches Report
In round 4 it was good to be back on the winners list. An eight goal win playing away against Glenunga. It wasn’t as easy as the final result may seem. Glenunga have struggled since coming up from division 3 and been on the end of some pretty heavy losses. Coaches always get nervous when playing bottom sides and we are expected to win. Due to injuries and availability, we were forced to make a number of changes, seven in total. It was a great opportunity to reward those players who had been playing consistently well in the reserves.
I’m not sure if it was complacency or new players taking time to adjust but Glenunga took it right up to us in the first half. Playing an attacking, play on quick, style of football. They were a lot cleaner with their possessions than us and on Glenunga’s very small oval turnovers result in goals against very quickly. At half time we lead by a single point.
The message was clear at half time, stay focused and be disciplined. We needed to pay them more respect when defending, force the turnover and then be cleaner with our disposal when attacking. We definitely lifted in the second half, outscoring our opposition 9.5 to 1.4.
Our best players on the day were mostly our defenders. Luke May, Declan Grant and Josh Teakle, were able to win their one on ones and provide great rebound for us from the half back line. Hamish Gordon once again showed how dangerous he can be as small forward, kicking 4.3.
It was pleasing to get the win, with a number of lessons being learned from the game. Improvement around our skill execution and discipline is needed to ensure we stay in the contest when playing better sides.
This week provides another good challenge for us playing Tea Tree Gully at home. We hope to see another great crowd, home attendances have been quite good this season and we really appreciate the support.
