Round 3 Coaches Report

Our first loss for the season last weekend, by 22 points to Henley. A disappointing result given the opportunities we had. We dominated play in the 1st and 2nd quarters but simply couldn’t put the score on the board. Henley took control in the 2nd half, making use of their opportunities with the breeze in the 3rd and controlling play in the 4th quarter restricting our opportunities to score.

Conditions were very windy, favouring one end all day. Both sides struggled to score against it. We didn’t make use of it when we had it. Missing a number of set shots at the start of the 2nd quarter and bombing the ball inside 50 in the last quarter.

Henley handled the conditions better, they moved the ball well, they were able to hit small lead up targets and possess the ball forward. They forced us kick long too often, which made it difficult for our forwards to get a one on one marking contest.

Liam Toohey, Dean Bonnici, Adam Scholz and Henry Papatolis were awarded our best players. Our ability to work hard in the midfield, our intensity and tackle pressure were great features of our game. Due to the windy condition there were a number of missed kicks and scrappy play from both sides, resulting in a number of repeat stoppages.

Although it was it was disappointing to lose at home, Henley are a good side, having only just come down from division 1. They are well drilled and executed their game plan better and for longer.

Players and supporters should be excited about the young and talented group that we have. We are definitely capable of matching it with the stronger sides in this division and we shouldn’t fear any team this year. It is important that we are more consistent with our game style and make better use of our opportunities.

This week we travel to Glenunga who have recently come up from Division 3 and they will be hungry for their first win. It’s important that our players don’t get complacent and we get back into working on our game style and keep improving. There were a number of injuries last week which will require me to make a number of changes to the side. It will be a good opportunity to reward those guys who have been playing consistently well in our reserve side. I know they have been hungry for their opportunity and will make an impact immediately.

We hope to see many of you at the game this week and please remember that we will be holding presentations back at the PHOS clubrooms at around 6:30pm afterwards.
