Round 2 Coaches Report

Another great win on the weekend. Salisbury North handed PHOS some big losses last year. It was pleasing for the players/supporters to travel north and get such great results in all grades. Big wins in both the B and C Grade Teams, is always a great motivator for the A Grade side. With a number of the B grade players continuing to play well, it puts pressure on the coaching staff to get team selection right each week.

Round 1’s best two players from the B’s (Mac Neild and Jono Koutsakis), forced their selection this week. Both came in played well and contributed to a great win. Congratulations to Mac Nield who played his first A Grade game for PHOS. I’m sure his form will warrant selection at West Adelaide in the coming weeks.

The weekend’s game was played at a frantic pace and was relatively free flowing but there were a number of big collisions. We unfortunately had a number of injuries on the weekend and our thoughts are with our Captain Jake Scharenberg.

I was very happy with how the players stuck to our structures and game plan. Going into the game we had a good understanding of how Salisbury North wanted to play and transition the ball. They wanted to play on quick and share the ball with small kicks and quick handballs. We had a focus of forcing them wide, owning the corridor and applying a lot of tackle pressure. This caused a number of turnovers which we were able to create scoring opportunities for ourselves. We had a large number of inside 50’s but need to work on our delivery to the advantage of our forwards, we kicked long to their spare player too often.

There were a number of pleasing performances from the weekend, picking best players was extremely difficult as we had so many contributors, which is always the case in a 10 goal win. Sam Williams and Hamish Gordon were very dangerous up forward kicking 6 and 5 goals respectively, as well as setting up a number of goals for their team mates. In the midfield Henry Papatolis, Will Papatolis and Luke May, made use of their exceptional aerobic capabilities to collect numerous possessions on a large field, receiving a number of handball receives and helping us transition the ball between the arcs.

This week we look forward to being at home again, it will be great see all our supporters and we hope to continue our winning form.
